Since the end of March, many countries apply summertime, a human invention. Some countries do not apply summertime (eg, Kenya). Our notion of time is directly related to the period that planet Earth needs for orbiting the Sun (ie, 365,256 days). Hence, any other planet must have a different notion of Time. Recently, I noticed an intriguing statement in a Nautilus...

We are eager to forget and eager to move on
18 Feb, 2022
Now that the Dutch corona restrictions are coming to an end, people are (very) eager to forget and (very) eager to move on. Nightclub tickets were sold out despite violating the rules (eg, AD). At their age, people view death as an unlucky coincidence rather than an imminent certainty. I'm somewhere in between. Some people assume that our social codes (eg, embrace,...
We are all searching for something for our entire life

Last week, we reached a joint conclusion: we are all searching for something for our entire life. She added that some people are actively searching while others are searching passively. In my life, this 'something' has been - and still is - a moving target (eg, contributing to society, delivering added value, learning, money, status, teaching, wisdom). I suppose...

A micro perspective may refer to the Third Law of Motion by Isaac Newton: "for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction" (source). A macro perspective on interconnectedness...
Go with the flow

A salmon lives in oceans or seas but returns to the place it was born in order to lay its eggs (ie, to spawn). That upstream river swim towards the spot where the salmon was born is so exhaustive that salmon "usually die after spawning" (source). I suppose this explains the human adage: go with the flow. Most of us adhere to that adage. At times, we don't like that...
The Flow: individual and collective
6 Jul, 2021
While editing my July 1 blog, I discovered the flow model by Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi. It combines several of my topics: Boredom, Control, Doubt (worry), Fear (anxiety), and Flow. Arousal is covered by my blogs on Love and on lust. Relaxation is covered in my blogs on happiness & satisfaction, and confident humility. Until my July 1 blog, I had never written...
