Quite regularly, I feel that my mind is on automatic pilot. That feeling is different from consciously following my daily routines. I suppose it’s like sleep walking while being fully awake and/but mildly aware.
In psychology, “autopilot” (or automaticity) is a state where the mind processes information and executes behaviors without conscious intention or present-moment awareness. It allows the brain to conserve energy during familiar tasks, but over-reliance on it can cause you to mentally check out from your daily life.

I don’t recognise the “warning” about “mentally checking out from daily life”. My autopilot status automatically (sic) stops when someone (eg, message) or something (eg, groceries) requires my full awareness.
I’m not sure about the alleged purpose: the brain (wants) to conserve energy. In my view, my autopilot status just feels comfortable. For decades, my daily feeling was about busy, busy, busy. Autopilot is a blessing in (my) life.
“Belief in God puts our life on autopilot. We know that someone up there is watching us and is in control. Losing our faith puts off the autopilot, we have to run it manually, and check if everything is alright for ourselves. No wonder religion has a wide appeal; most of us are lazy and would like a supreme being to be in charge”

‘Autopilot’ originally started out as a song about my phobia of driving. I’m 26 years old and I’ve had my permit three times, but ultimately the responsibility of driving has always terrified me. While it started out as a song about something silly, it ended up being an exercise to write about my weaknesses. I don’t like to tell people how to interpret my songs, but I think ‘Autopilot’ can take on a double meaning about trying to break through the feeling of going through the motions.
