The Fermi paradox (2)

A decade ago, I published: The Fermi paradox and some other similar questions (2016, part 1). Recently, an interview with Simon Conway Morris, evolutionary biologist, argued this: ‘We’re Looking in the Wrong Place’: On Life, Aliens, and Human Uniqueness.

My main question is this one: what would be the human response during an extraterrestrial encounter? Doubt, Fear, Hope, or Love?

Most likely Fear because “they” would be superior while “we” would feel inferior. In my view, that is the main explanation for the Fermi paradox.

“The Fermi paradox is the apparent contradiction between the lack of conclusive evidence of advanced extraterrestrial life and the apparently high likelihood of its existence. In simple terms, the Fermi paradox asks why, given the vast number of stars and potentially habitable planets in our observable universe, there is no clear evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations.” (Wiki)

Other explanations are:

  • Why would superior intelligence be interested in inferior intelligence? Moreover, humans are neither interested in (alleged) inferior intelligence (eg, animals, plants, trees).
  • What would superior intelligence gain from a very aggressive human race? Humans are apex predators. Superior intelligence is wise in leaving us alone.
  • Why would humans trust peaceful intentions from extraterrestrials? Trust between humans is already a (big) challenge.

Hence, the Sci-Fi comedy The Orville (ie, Se01Ep12) argued that extraterrestrial civilisations are only allowed to observe primitive civilisations rather than interfere. I believe that this notion is valid.

Actually, the Wiki list of extraterrestrial / UFO observations is quite long. That list does not even include Line 1 of the Sumerian King List: “After the kingship descended from heaven, the kingship was in Eridu.”

In my view, the Fermi paradox is consistent with a human belief in superiority. Once you believe in human primitivism then the long list of UFO encounters is consistent with extraterrestrial observations.
