Sta Hungry Stay Foolish

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

Leon the Professional

For several decades, I felt like Leon the Professional. Nowadays, I feel more like the carefree boy Leon 1971. Both are my main alter egos. There are more. My alter egos define who I am. I doubt that you can ever lose one of your alter egos. Your alter egos are part of who you are – today.

Moreover, there is no need for losing an alter ego, unless you’ve lost your belief in yourself. Probably, accepting yourself (eg, deeds, flaws, history, shortcomings) is the most difficult accomplishment in anyone’s life. Self-love, a.k.a philautia, is the result. Self-love is an opposite of narcissism (eg, my 2016 blog).

In my previous life, I dressed for success (eg, Italian costumes and shoes, expensive ties). To some extent, my outfits made me look bigger than the boy inside me. Nowadays, I do the opposite: making myself look smaller. I prefer to be underestimated by others rather than overestimated.

Please also see my 2022 blog The Big-small principle:

The Big-small principle is my invention of many, many years ago. My principle works as follows: people who inflate their ego (eg, through arrogance) will often look petty and/or shallow in the eyes of others. Similarly, people who express humility to others, may appear impressive to those others.

I suppose that my writing is related to Leon the Professional, It took me decades to remember the ambitions of Leon 1971: do research and write a book about ancient history. My blogs on the Sumerian civilisation come quite close to that boyhood ambition.

My motto in life is a combination of Leon the Professional and Leon 1971: Trust, but verify.

Trust, but verify” [..] is a Russian proverb, which rhymes in Russian. The phrase became internationally known in English after Suzanne Massie, a scholar of Russian history, taught it to Ronald Reagan, then president of the United States, who used it on several occasions in the context of nuclear disarmament discussions with the Soviet Union
