Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

Body, Mind & Soul

Sometimes an article compels me to writing about it, like The invention of the soul by Nicholas Humphrey, a theoretical psychologist. I suppose that the article’s subtitle explains its contents:

“Humans weren’t given souls by God or genes. We made them ourselves with language – turning sentience into something sacred”

The very same can be argued about consciousness: humans created that word and nobody can explain what consciousness actually is. Our solution for any lack of evidence or proof is our concept of human beliefs.

Any human belief has the following characteristics: we know that we do not know but we still believe.

The response to human beliefs is as follows:

  • Demanding proof of existence: agnostic (Religion); science-fiction (Technology);
  • Refusal to accept: atheism (Religion), crypto (Money), luddites (Technology), and legends & myths (ancient history);
  • Human ignorance (eg, “I don’t know”, “no opinion”) might well be a third response.

It’s interesting that the writer’s article includes the ancient Sumerian civilisation that created a difference between Eṭemmu (ie, human spirit) and Zaqīqu (ie, human soul).

Nobody knows where the Sumerian civilisation came from (eg, see Line 1 in the Sumerian King List) but they invented almost everything (eg, agriculture, geometry, mathematics, timekeeping).

Sumerian beliefs argue that the soul or Zaqīqu enters the body at birth, and leaves during final breath. Some people have argued there’s a difference in bodily weight before and after demise (eg, 21 grams experiment).

I conclude with my 2017 diagram that is highly ranked in Google’s results:
