Last weekend, a shining sun made me look outside. Between planet Earth and the Sun is a void of about 150 million kilometers. Another view is that this void is full of Light (eg, sunlight, UV radiation, warmth).
The Ancient Greek assumed that this void was filled by aether, as a 5th classical element next to air, earth, fire & water. Wiki: “The classical elements [..] were proposed to explain the nature and complexity of all matter in terms of simpler substances.”
Remarkably, Light or sunlight didn’t meet those criteria. Without sunlight, darkness would “rule”, and matter would not grow. However, a recent scientific discovery challenges that notion:
“When cave biologist Hazel Barton ventured into the pitch darkness, the last thing she expected to find were organisms harnessing energy from light. This new understanding of photosynthesis in the dark, she realised, means life elsewhere in the Universe could exist in places we never thought possible.”

Perhaps, another recent scientific discovery has a bearing on the above:
“The surprising result is that termites increased their social complexity by losing genetic complexity,” Professor Lo said. “That goes against a common assumption that more complex animal societies require more complex genomes.”

I think, feel and believe that both scientific discoveries relate to (increasing) consciousness. An intriguing view emerges:
- more void = more sunlight = less biological complexity = more social complexity = advanced consciousness.
“By convention there is color, by convention sweetness, by convention bitterness, but in reality there are atoms and the void,” announced Democritus. The universe consists only of atoms and the void; all else is opinion and illusion. If the soul exists, it also consists of atoms.”
