Intuition, an unknown known

Intuition has become a regular topic and I finally created a (new) label. The problem with intuition is that nobody knows the how, what, when, where, who orwhy. Intuition is a mystery. It’s also a unknown known: we know that we don’t know its source. Usually, we trust the source of such data-info.

Several decades ago, I had an outside appointment that day. Suddenly, my intuition warned me of lethal danger. That feeling felt very real. After some consideration, I called my appointment and explained my cancellation. There was no evidence of that danger despite keeping myself informed.

In the risk-reward consideration of my intuition, I used Blaise Pascal’s wager: the upside of ignoring that threat was very low, while the downside of that threat was very high. The French mathematician Blaise Pascal (1623-1662) became famous for a similar risk-reward argument about the existence of God.

If intuition is not part of our individual consciousness then there are two alternative sources:

My latest diagram has incorporated that:

The term consciousness has 4 dimensions for our mind:

Some may call intuition a feeling; probably because it feels like a feeling. However, intuition is from our mind rather than our body (eg, arousal).

Some intriguing and interesting quotes:

  • Albert Einstein: “I believe in intuitions and inspirations…I sometimes FEEL that I am right. I do not KNOW that I am.”
  • Farrah Fawcett: “God made man stronger but not necessarily more intelligent. He gave women intuition and femininity. And, used properly, that combination easily jumbles the brain of any man I’ve ever met.”
  • Gavin De Becker: “intuition is always right in at least two important ways; It is always in response to something. it always has your best interest at heart”
  • Blaise Pascal: “Dull minds are never either intuitive or mathematical.”
