The above phrase is from a recent SCMP article (on trade and EV tariffs). In and of itself, this phrase seems true. Once you reflect on the meaning of progress then things get fuzzy because progress is philosophical and one-directional.
“Progress is movement towards a perceived refined, improved, or otherwise desired state. It is central to the philosophy of progressivism, which interprets progress as the set of advancements in technology, science, and social organization efficiency – the latter being generally achieved through direct societal action, as in social enterprise or through activism, but being also attainable through natural sociocultural evolution – that progressivism holds all human societies should strive towards.”

Arguments on the how and why this phrase is not true are also about EV’s:
“It’s been on the cards for some time now, but Porsche has officially announced its plans to scale back its electric vehicle plans while extending the lifespan of its combustion-powered models in the process. The move comes in response to a lack of growth in demand for high performance electric vehicles, and while it’s great news for drivers, it will come at a significant cost to Porsche.”

My second argument is also about my own choice and priorities:
“As full battery electrification continues to gain more followers, Toyota sticks to its guns and insists that offering multiple fuel-efficient powertrain options is the better way to approach achieving a net carbon-neutral industry. This is a stance that garnered it a lot of criticism, but in recent years, we’ve seen a bunch of manufacturers slowly walking away from their full electrification transitions in favor of hybrid powertrains, effectively proving that Toyota was right all along.”

Another argument: political progressives (eg, Labour, Left-Liberals) around the world are losing from conservative nationalists. Hence, progress can be stopped.
Last but not least, a (mutually agreed upon) relationship breakup recently happened to me, which is another argument why this philosophical phrase is not true.
In my view, philosophy is (very) dangerous because it’s quite often used to justify certain deeds, words & intentions. This SCMP article is an example. The 2011 Norway attacks were deeply rooted in nationalist philosophy.
