Sta Hungry Stay Foolish

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

A new Moscow on the Hudson (6)

Following American election results (eg, New York City, New Jersey, Virginia), I doubt that Europeans can and/or will truly understand Americans. European socialism is dead, while European nationalism is surging.

Zohran Mamdani was elected mayor of New York in a historic victory that will put an avowed democratic socialist — and the first Muslim and person of South Asian descent — in charge of the global financial capital. Democrats swept all three major local elections in the US by wider-than-expected margins, giving the beleaguered party a much needed boost 10 months into Trump’s second term. In California, Governor Gavin Newsom secured a significant win when voters passed a measure that could flip as many as five congressional seats to Democrats from Republicans.”

Perhaps, the Financial Times correctly claims that “Republicans [were] defeated in New Jersey and Virginia as voters rebuke president’s party”. Perhaps, BNR’s claim is valid that “local American elections were a Trump referendum”.

Nevertheless, I’ve been expecting this outcome since 2015, and have repeated my blog title in 2018, 2019 (3x), and in 2020.

In my view, the American inequality between the super-rich (minority) and the ultra-poor (majority) is the fundamental reason for such election results. Trump is just the tipping point – as quite often in his case.

Europan equality has moved voters away from communism and socialism. First towards conservative liberalism and then towards nationalism.

The UK, however, will – usually – resemble American rather than Continental European politics.

Nevertheless, Americans residing in Europe favour (American) inequality because that allows for their American Dream. Americans living in Europe fail to understand – let alone to appreciate – European choices and priorities.

I suppose most Europeans view the American Dream as rooted in extreme inequality. Any US vacation will that very clear. Only some (young) European entrepreneurs are the exception. Money will blind most people.

American Dream (1988) by Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young

[Bridge]
You wake up in the middle of the night
Your sheets are wet and your face is white
You tried to make a good thing last
How could something so good, go bad, so fast?
American dream, American dream
American dream, American dream
