I agree with this Financial Times heading and that is a problem. Over the years, I have learned that voters are emotional rather than rational – let alone logical and consistent. Hence, my expectation is that Geert Wilders (PVV) will – once again – win the 2025 Dutch general election.
Most other Dutch political parties claim that they will not form a coalition government with Geert Wilders. Hence, it’s most likely that the 2025 Dutch outcome will become quite close to a stalemate. Nevertheless, an important proverb says that it’s better to bend than to break.
Who will bend??
Several days ago, the Dutch Financial Times published a (Dutch-language) analysis: Why does the PVV-voter stay with Geert Wilders? Their question is very relevant; their answer was too rational (ie, migrants & refugees). Many Dutch voters love Wilders, like many American voters love Trump.
Love is the most difficult word in our vocabulary. It’s much easier to explain Knowledge (eg, facts) and Power (eg, King, President). Hence, explaining the love for Wilders – or Trump – is impossible. However, some ancient Greek words for love come quite close: agape, pragma, and storge.
In 2010, Mark Rutte bent over to Geert Wilders to form Rutte-1. In 2012, Geert Wilders broke up with Rutte. Despite Mark Rutte’s warnings, the same happened following the 2023 Dutch general election. After bending over to Geert Wilders, he broke within 1 year. See Dutch PM’s speech of 3 June 2025.
I expect the same for the 2025 Dutch general election: Geert Wilders will bend and break (up). Hence, the Keane song below: Bend and Break.
