Faith in AI

Recently, I asked a friend about his tips for my thought provoking topics. He said: “How about AI and Faith“. That put me on my wrong foot because Faith is – in my view – a human belief in a divine love a.k.a. agape. In his view, Faith is about (unlimited) trust. I can relate to misplaced trust following an incident.

Recently, I made a Google query. The Dutch Google AI summary claimed that all hybrid models have a premium audio system, while the non-hybrid systems do not. Latter should have alerted me because non-hybrid models are only available in USA. Hence, it was a Dutch translation of American info.

That incident alerted me that I should limit my trust in AI. Having faith in AI is rather ridiculous in my view. AI is almost entirely built by humans, although the CEO of Anthropic recently claimed that “Anthropic’s Claude is getting better in building itself“.

My friend claims that young people are overtrusting AI and may even reach the stage of having faith in AI. He may have a valid point. In my view, all parents feel similar about protecting their children. I suppose the same happened at the consumer introduction of the internet in the late 1980s / early 1990s.

The incident above opened my eyes and the same will happen to young people. Learning usually comes at a certain cost (eg, error, fault, mistake, penalty). This is also called the learning curve and/or hitting the brick wall. In my view, such learning is necessary for all of us.

However, at a certain point in time, we will need to have faith in AI (eg, space travel). There will be no alternative.

“A year spent in Artificial Intelligence is enough to make one believe in God.”

A quote by Alan J. Perlis (1922-1990), an American computer scientist and university professor

[Chorus]
‘Cause I gotta’ have faith
I gotta have faith
Because I gotta have faith, faith
I got to have faith, faith, faith
