A necessary kind of evil

Recently, I watched the TV crime series Dalgliesh, SE03 Ep5+6, in which a bartender made the remark that some villagers viewed the nearby nuclear power station as a “necessary kind of evil”. Necessary referred to jobs and money (eg, villagers). Evil referred to nuclear (eg, radiation, waste).

“A necessary evil is an evil that someone believes must be done or accepted because it is necessary to achieve a better outcome—especially because possible alternative courses of action or inaction are expected to be worse. It is the “lesser evil” in the lesser of two evils principle, which maintains that given two bad choices, the one that is least bad is the better choice.”

Could the current American president be qualified as a necessary kind of evil ??

American opinion polls (eg, Gallup, Pew), suggest that even his supporters view him as a necessary kind of evil, towards American Democrats, Liberals and/or the woke-Left. The evil then refers to his personality traits and his job performance. Obviously, his opponents view him as (just) evil.

The American president might indeed be an example of a necessary evil. Still, I doubt that he qualifies for the lesser of two evils principle. In a 2016 Politico article, Bernie Sanders claimed that Hillary Clinton fits the lesser of two evils principle; not the current American president.

I suppose that the current American president, being a necessary kind of evil, will either accelerate the American demise, or reinvoke the legendary American resilience. Only time will tell.

American resilience, the ability to bounce back from challenges, is a recurring theme in American history and culture. Several quotes capture this spirit: “The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today,” highlighting the power of optimism and perseverance. “The oak fought the wind and was broken, the willow bent when it must and survived,” emphasizes adaptability and finding strength in flexibility. Finally, “Life doesn’t get easier or more forgiving; we get stronger and more resilient,” speaks to personal growth through adversity.
