A recent Politico article stated: “Europe seeks to capitalize on America’s Trump-driven brain drain [ ] The EU’s body for scientific research, as well as local, regional and national governments, are mobilizing to poach top U.S. scholars.”
Actually, it’s tempting to ridicule the possibility of an American brain drain to Europe. Also given this March 5 Dutch article: Americans in Amsterdam on the latest Trump actions: ‘Europe needs us and not the other way around’.
Those Americans living in (green-left-liberal) Amsterdam may have changed their views given his more recent actions; probably not. However, Europe (or any other territory) does not need Trump’s USA; except for some people.
Nevertheless, there are a lot of “top U.S. scholars”. Would they really be interested in leaving Trump’s USA and living+working abroad?? Some articles do claim Chinese-US scholars are returning to China (eg, WaPo, GT, source).
In my view, American and European cultures are very different; see my blogs of 2018-06, 2018-11, 2024 and 2025. I would no longer be willing to emigrate to USA, regardless of Trump. I expect the same opinion from Americans.
Moreover, Trump-2025 is just 4 years, regardless of his third-term claim. Early indications also suggest an emerging political shift, away from Trump and Musk, following their actions (eg, Axios, FT, Nat Rev, WSJ).
Hence, I do not believe in an American brain drain (sic!).
