Trump is creating new enemies every single day. Some day, they will realise an ancient proverb: the enemy of my enemy is my friend, “which suggests that two parties can or should work together against a common enemy.”
I doubt Trump cares about friendly nations. Retaliatory measures (eg, by Canada) against USA will only “prove” Trump’s point: friendly nations do not exist. However, doing nothing would only evidence their weakness.
Hence, the biblical approach adopted by Trump’s frenemies: an eye for an eye, “expressing the principle of reciprocal justice measure for measure.” Escalation would be far worse than reciprocity.
Allegedly, China has started a charm offensive in Europe and in the UK:

While China is courting Europe, the EU is courting India (eg, BBC, DW, EC, ECFR, Politico, VOA). Hence, implementing the enemy of my enemy is my friend is still far, far away. I suppose latter is part of Trump’s gamble.
A (very) serious threat for Trump is this comment by a Republican Senator:
“This week started with administration officials refusing to acknowledge that Russia started the war in Ukraine. It ends with a tense, shocking conversation in the Oval Office and whispers from the White House that they may try to end all U.S. support for Ukraine. I know foreign policy is not for the faint of heart, but right now, I am sick to my stomach as the administration appears to be walking away from our allies and embracing Putin, a threat to democracy and U.S. values around the world.”
