Back to the middle?

There’s an interesting Dutch political trend following the course of Trump-2025 in the Russian-Ukraine war. Dutch voters, including me, are turning away from parties (ie, PVV, NSC, BBB) that seem to abandon Ukraine, like Trump does.

I’m not a fan of Ukraine but I do not trust Russia – at all. Abandoning Ukraine implies a carte blanche for further Russian invasions (eg, Baltics, Moldova, Romania). I suppose Dutch voters agree with that threat.

Late 2023, several nationalist parties (ie, PVV, NSC, BBB) won big in the 2023 general election, while globalist parties lost (eg, CDA, VVD).

Today, a reversal is taking place. Hence, my title: back to the middle?

I doubt the same trend is happening in USA because Anglo-American countries (eg, Australia, Canada, UK, USA) lack a middle. Such countries basically have a two-party system, unlike the multi-party European systems.

Nevertheless, a retreat of Dutch nationalist parties, in favour of globalist parties, will be indicative of global trends. The blatant arrogance and ignorance of Trump-2025 is to blame for that reversal.

Actually, that American reversal may already be happening but voter anger is leading. GOP officials are even urged to skip town hall meetings (eg, Politico) in order to avoid angry American voters (eg, ABC, CNN, the Hill).

Few U.S. Democrats are benefiting from voter anger, apart from this exception: Bernie Sanders Is Tapping Into a Deep Vein of Anger in America; a NYT opinion article. Probably, polarisation will further increase (eg, Tesla violence).

Any pendulum swing will ultimately lose its strength and return to its equilibrium (ie, the middle). I did not expect this quick reversal. Probably, only arrogance and ignorance are to blame for that.

[Chorus]
Respectively, they go to extremes, of masculine and feminine
Chasing dreams, but they keep on falling, ’cause they don’t know no balance
When will they learn, to come back to the middle?
