Ageing

Ageing was never an issue for me. I’m still wondering why that is changing. My mother turned 90 last year. My father died in 1994 at 61. Last week, I turned 65. In my view, ageing is a blessing in disguise, even despite declining health.

I suppose that (my) ageing is more visible to me than before. Probably, my eyes “opened” after falling from an electric bike during a test drive, while stopping it. People rushed to me and had to help me getting up again.

My 2025 recovery was swift following a visit to an osteopathy. However, the lack of a recovery from my 2019 (self-inflicted) injury became all too apparent. Slowly, that 2019 recovery is finally taking place.

I’ve been “complaining” about my slow recovery. At one time, the Belgian osteopath stated the Dutch hit song title below: you’re getting older, daddy. He was very right by making that subtle observation.

The flip-side of “opening” my eyes on my ageing, is that the ageing of others has also become more visible to me. That can be rather confronting because you’re also looking at “yourself” in 10, 20 or 30 years time.

I suppose the above is an example of the five stages of grief by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, which are: (1) denial, (2) anger, (3) bargaining, (4) depression, and (5) acceptance (a.k.a. DABDA). In my view, grief equals (life’s) changes.

At times, my “complaining” felt like I was assuming a victim role. I hope that my “complaining” only represented my asking for (some) empathy. Not too much though as I’m not a victim. Daddy is just getting older.

Je Wordt Ouder Papa (1977) by Peter Koelewijn

Oh je wordt ouder papa, geef het maar toe
Je wil er alles aan doen maar je weet niet hoe

En je blijft maar lachen al stort je in en al ben je dagenlang stijf
