Trump’s recent comments on Ukraine president Zelenskyy might well be Trump’s well-timed distraction for much more relevant Trump news: American inflation is back and “I had nothing to do with it” (eg, the Hill, 19 February 2025).
Trump’s former Vice President Mike Pence reacted as follows to Trump’s version of the truth on the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine:
“Mr. President, Ukraine did not “start” this war. Russia launched an unprovoked and brutal invasion claiming hundreds of thousands of lives. The Road to Peace must be built on the Truth.”
One could argue that Trump’s inauguration was only on 20 January 2025. How could he be accountable or responsible for higher inflation?? Well, Trump started his tariff threats much earlier; see my 2024 blog Trump’s import tariffs.
Moreover, Trump’s falsehoods are dividing Republicans (eg, Washington Examiner) and are uniting Europe (eg, Politico-1, Politico-2). I suppose that Trump never appreciated this famous saying on divide vs unite:
“Divide and rule, a sound motto. Unite and lead, a better one.”
A quote by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749–1832), a German polymath
I suppose that Trump fears what will really hurt him and his voters: inflation. Hence, all political distractions are “legitimized” in his view. So far, Trump voters are responding rather mildly to his performance (eg, WaPo/Ipsos).
Why are distractions so important for Donald Trump? Please see my 2017 blog Focus vs Distraction and its schematic composition:

Distractions will keep Trump’s voters away from slow thinking. All other voters are irrelevant to him.

Even if it doesn’t mean that I’ll get to you
