On 18 June 2024, Hungary announced its official motto for its 2024 Hungarian presidency of the Council of the European Union: Make Europe Great Again or MEGA (source). Early 2025, a MEGA rally was held in Madrid.
I hardly noticed that alternative MAGA slogan, until the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) – as well as Elon Musk – started using it (very) recently:
“Forget MAGA, Investors Want MEGA: Make Europe Great Again The threat of losing U.S. military support is triggering welcome change in the European Union, but will also pose a difficult test”

Is Make Europe Great Again (MEGA) an interesting idea ??
The official Hungarian arguments appear fine:
“Make Europe Great Again” will be the motto of the Hungarian Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which refers to both an active and proactive Presidency and to the fact that member states are stronger together than apart. It also symbolises the perception that Europe can become an independent global player.

The flip side of MEGA feels wrong: currently, Europe is not Great.
Compared to the United States of America, Europe feels sane, while America feels insane. A Canadian blog comment stated something similar: Americans have the IQ of a 4 year old.
In 2018 and 2024, I compared Europe and USA and used these (SWOT) arguments:
Hence, the MEGA slogan feels like a repeat of the insanity behind Trump’s MAGA slogan. My (Dutch) arguments are in my image at the right: America worse than Europe (eg, crime, healthcare, inequality, pensions, racism).
Europe should explain why it is already greater than America. Forget MEGA.
