Soon, Trump’s USA will negotiate with Russia about peace in Ukraine. Some European countries want – rather than need – to participate in such negotiations. However, not participating has more advantages than disadvantages.
My explanation is important because everything follows Why.
Successful negotiations will be claimed by its “parents”. Unsuccessful negotiations result in an “orphan”, for whom no parent will take responsibility. In my view, unsuccessful negotiations seem more than likely in this instance.
Ukraine insisted on participation and “gained” a seat. Their participation will, however, allow Trump’s USA and Russia to force their “compromise” upon Ukraine. No participation, however, could have resulted in a rejection.
By not attending these negotiations, Europe must – and will – claim that U.S. negotiation equals American responsibility. Hence, American soldiers must – and will – be involved despite recent American denial (eg, Reuters).
Ultimately, Ukraine is a buffer state with no American and/or European connection. In several decades, Ukraine may choose another pro-Russian president. Hence, Trump’s valid claim: Ukraine ’may be Russian someday’.
In my view, Russia and Ukraine are like Cain and Abel, the biblical brothers. Wiki: “Cain killed Abel and God cursed Cain, sentencing him to a life of transience.” Russia’s future may well also be one of transience.
Every disadvantage has its advantage.
