Recently, the chairman of the Munich Security Conference (ie, Christoph Heusgen) stated something that feels very, very familiar: “This America under Trump lives on another planet”.
Is this development indicative of an American alienation of Europe??
The complexity of the answer relates to the triangle of deeds, words & intentions. Anyone’s words can only be trusted when supported by deeds and by intentions. Quite likely, Trump’s triangle is “broken”.
The answer with respect to Words is relatively simple: yes, America is alienating from Europe. Deeds, however, do not (yet) show that alienation. The most difficult answer is about American intentions.
Trump’s and American intentions are not necessarily the same. Another – temporary ?? – complication. Allegedly, Trump does not believe in allies and/or friends. I doubt such a belief is common in America.
Recently, Dutch author Benno Barnard published an interesting opinion in a Belgian newspaper: No, Trump is not a fascist, he is a narcissist without ideology. In my view, Trump does have one (1) ideology, being Money.
Intentions and ideology are intertwined. Ideology will (often) reveal intentions. An absence of ideology will probably result in an absence of intentions. Money, as an ideology, and narcissism go well together.
Hence, Trump’s intentions are – probably and primarily – about greed and lust (eg, money, women, power).
My analysis above would give the most likely answer: there is a mismatch between Trump’s – let alone American – deeds, words & intentions.
