Sta Hungry Stay Foolish

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

A blog by Leon Oudejans

Every country has the government it deserves

My blog title is an English translation of a French saying (ie, “Toute nation a le gouvernement qu’elle mérite”) by French philosopher Joseph de Maistre (1753–1821). That French saying is getting relevance considering the (very) remarkable choices for the forthcoming 2025 U.S. Administration.

I suppose such choices reveal their priorities. If not, those choices seem rather laughable given the blatant arrogance and/or ignorance of some of the people involved (NYP). In my view, arrogance and ignorance are recipes for failure. One of those people is even unlikely to get Republican approval (WE).

Given Trump’s (very) high age (b.1946), the Republican Party will not become a rubber stamp, unlike parliaments in China and Russia. Therefore, the 2025 Republican trifecta is more likely to become his obstacle than his tool.

“A government trifecta is a political situation in which the same political party controls the executive branch and both chambers of the legislative branch in countries that have a bicameral legislature and an executive that is not fused. The term is primarily used in the United States, where the term originated—being borrowed from horse race betting.”

The (very) high speed of 2025 U.S. political nominations is staggering. Quite likely, this recent Washington Examiner (WE) heading is therefore valid: “Trump tries to right his biggest wrong from first term with Cabinet picks”. However, in my view, speed is often an enemy of quality.

Donald Trump argues that “America is a nation in decline”. I agree for reasons that are different than Trump’s: USA is a superpower in decline. Trump’s forthcoming actions (eg, deportations, healthcare, MediCare, Social Security) will only cement that USA is (indeed) a nation in decline.

Some magazines argue that Europe Must Unlock Its Geoeconomic Power (ie, Foreign Affairs-2024), or that The world needs a leader. Europe should step up (ie, WEF-2018). A 2022 Quora article asks a valid question: Is Europe going to be the next world leader?

In my view, a vacuum in geopolitics may arise, depending on the – true rather than allegedactions of the 2025 U.S. Administration. I doubt that Europe is able, eager, or willing to fill that vacuum – unless they must. I cannot (yet) imagine latter. I do agree European words suggest a different tune.

Going To a Town (2007) by Rufus Wainwright
artist, lyrics, video, Wiki-artist, Wiki-song

[Verse 1]
I’m going to a town that has already been burnt down
I’m going to a place that has already been disgraced
I’m gonna see some folks who have already been let down
I’m so tired of America
