Several days ago, my girlfriend started saying to me: “Yes, but you …….”. I made a joke about her remark. However, I also realised that this common “yes, but” is quite an interesting blog topic.
Actually, I prefer saying “yes, and ……”; also the Ariana Grande song below. I agree with this Kinetic remark: ““Yes, buts” [..] are conversation killers. They close the door to opportunity, creativity and cooperation.”
The acceptance and the denial, in only one sentence, relate to showing both sides of a story, and their contradiction(s). It makes you wonder what’s more important: acceptance OR denial. Hence, yes, buts are “conversation killers”.
“ “Yes, and” is a powerful tool for collaboration, negotiation and effective communication. The concept of “Yes, and” comes from the improvisational stage, and over the last 15 years, I’ve seen it transform leaders and teams across industries.”
A 2014 HuffPost quote from “Yes, But” – The Evil Twin to “Yes, And”
Apparently, the “Kazakh artist and Moscow-resident” as well as “IT engineer” Anton Gudim had a similar feeling when developing his “Yes, But” comics. The quote below, and the cartoon below, “Show How Contradictory Society Is”:
“Anton is a master of absurdity, irony, and dark humor. His illustrations perfectly capture the ridiculousness of modern society and make fun of something that we have accepted as normal.”

Interestingly, I just noticed this Apeejay Newsroom (eg, Wiki) article, entitled: Effective Communication: Five phrases to replace ‘Yes, but…’. These are its 5 alternative suggestions:
- “Yes, And…”: Building Bridges, Not Barriers;
- “I See Your Point, And…”: Empathy in Action;
- “That’s True, However…”: Navigating Nuance;
- “Agreed, Yet…”: Harmony Amidst Divergence;
- “Indeed, On the Other Hand…”: Balancing Act of Dialogue.
