The complexity bias (14): layers of complexity

Yesterday’s blog, Is the Universe alive?, gave me a new idea: layers of complexity rather than a revised definition of life, following the what is life scientific debate (eg, NYT-2024).

The drawing below appeared and developed in my mind, following my inspiration, and/but might well change over time. It still feels rather elementary. The bottom of my triangle represents (assumed) simplicity while its top represents (unknown) complexity.

I’m not sure if dark energy and dark matter belong in my drawing.

However, scientists claim both represent about 95% of the Universe.

Hence, my choice.

In the green middle, there is matter (eg, planets) and energy (eg, our sun). The next layer of complexity feels already weird: consciousness. Nevertheless, it must have arrived early rather than late. Perhaps, consciousness should even be the very first item.

In my view, viruses may well the incubator for unicellular and multicellular life – and death. The mostly unknown genetic composition of viruses might suggest that viruses are not from planet Earth but extraterrestrial (eg, my 2015 blog).

Human technology separates us from all other living organisms on planet Earth. Superior advanced alien technology (eg, UFOs) separates them from us. I have no clue what might be the next layer of complexity. Hence, my unknown.

Long known as a messenger within cells, RNA is increasingly seen as life’s molecular communication system — even between organisms widely separated by evolution.
