Recently, the Washington Post (WaPo) published this article: How to stop Europe’s decline, an opinion by its Editorial Board. Its subtitle was: “Fixing the European Union’s flagging economy will require it to reconsider key elements of its architecture.”
The WaPo may well be right about Europe’s flagging economy but why do they fail to see the American decline in almost every area of its society, apart from the American economy (eg, technology) and its military power?
First and foremost, Europe is not a (legal or political) Federation of member states. Europe is only a geographical location, either including or excluding the UK (ie, continental Europe). More and more, I have become reluctant in accepting the notion of a Federal Republic of European states.
I used to be a big supporter of USA and visited that country a lot. In my view, I saw most of North America. I still love that country (eg, highways, national parks, Redwood national forest, small rural towns) but not its people. Nowadays, I’m mostly viewing its decline, albeit from a distance and without emotion.
I still struggle if I’m in favour or against the European Union of 27 member states, following the UK’s Brexit in 2020. I suppose the main pro-argument is the joint economic approach towards China, Russia, and even USA. My main con-argument is its hunger for centralization of Power, and its expansion.
I sincerely doubt that the American decline can be stopped. A Harris-presidency may delay its inevitable decline though. Actually, China, Russia and USA are all three in unstoppable decline. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine that Europe is willing – let alone able – to fill that (slowly) emerging vacuum.
The above has been detailed in some of my earlier blogs:
In my view, the likely outcome is one of the 7 unresolved prophecies by American clairvoyant Edgar Cayce (1877-1945): the demise of the Chinese Communist Party, “more democracy and greater religious freedom”, and “the height of civilization would move from the West to the Chinese people” (source).
