Sta Hungry Stay Foolish

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

A blog by Leon Oudejans

Anything given can be taken away

Several weeks ago, my blog title entered my mind. It refers to all 3 dimensions: Knowledge (eg, health, life), Love (eg, relationships), and Power (eg, leadership). It applies to macro (eg, society) and micro (eg, individual) situations.

These macro and micro situations refer to giving and taking. Governments and organisations can give (eg, allowances, benefits, grants) and then take away. Neighbours can give (eg, friendship) and then take away.

My topic has a positive intention: be grateful for what you have while you have it. In 2013, everything went wrong in my life: a divorce court battle, my health, money, parental alienation, and a (new) broken relationship. Divine intervention changed everything.

The quote and the song below feel very different: memento mori. Indeed, these two lines on Wikipedia explain the 1997 song:

“On the final day of mixing and recording apart Walsh was informed that his young son had been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness. After this, Walsh suspended writing and touring for the Apartments to devote his attention to his son, who died two years later in September 1999.”

Source: Wikipedia, see 5th paragraph

Perhaps, the above is why I have ignored this topic for weeks. A positive mindset may not be your first notion when reading my blog title. However, I come from a different angle: each day, I am grateful for still being around.

Nevertheless, it’s easy to focus on the who or what we are missing in our lives. I’m no exception. Often, it’s rather difficult remembering what we have while we still have it. A negative mindset is more common than a positive one. Why??

To be continued tomorrow.

“What is given may be taken away, at any time. Cruelty and devastation wait for you around corners, inside coffers, behind doors: they can leap out at you at any time, like a thief or brigand. The trick is never to let down your guard. Never think you are safe. Never take for granted that your children’s hearts beat, that they sup milk, that they draw breath, that they walk and speak and smile and argue and play. Never for a moment forget they may be gone, snatched from you, in the blink of an eye, borne away from you like thistledown.”

A quote from the novel Hamnet (2020) by Maggie O’Farrell, a “novelist from Northern Ireland“

So tell me what comes after “The Big Sleep”
Does longing stop? And are you never beat anymore?
Is everything given to be taken away?
Given to be taken away
