For many humans, it’s difficult to separate facts from (false) opinions. Moreover, the internet is full of (false) opinions, while it’s (probably) the main database for machine learning. Hence, machine unlearning will have – at least – similar challenges as humans, and/but probably much bigger ones.
I use doubt to separate facts from (false) opinions. I verify everything that feels like a false opinion. Often verification brings me the clarity that I was anticipating. However, my doubt is a mix of (at least) emotions (eg, feelings) and ratio. This makes me wonder about machine (un-) learning.
The link between facts, opinions, and (un)learning becomes clear in the CNET AI scandal example:
“In November 2022, CNET began publishing articles written with artificial intelligence and edited by humans. CNET received criticism for failing to disclose that it was using a machine to write articles. CNET conducted a review of these articles in January 2023 after many were found to contain serious errors and plagiarized material.”

Hence, an early 2024 Axios article concluded the following: Copyright is AI’s new battlefield. I suppose that American legislation will find a solution for AI, which will be similar to Section 230 that “provides immunity for online computer services with respect to third-party content generated by its users.”
The link between facts, opinions, learning, and unlearning is excellently worded in the following quote:
“Girls are socialised in ways that are harmful to their sense of self – to reduce themselves, to cater to the egos of men, to think of their bodies as repositories of shame. As adult women, many struggle to overcome, to unlearn, much of that social conditioning.”

[Chorus]
‘Cause if I’m gonna learn how to love you
I need to unlearn how to love too
Need to unlearn how to run when it feels right
Oh my God, I’m tryin’
If I’m gonna learn how to choose you
I need to unlearn what I’m used to
Need to unlearn how to run when it feels right
Oh my God, I’m tryin’
