I’ve always viewed the moral hazard problem as a macro rather than a micro issue (eg, too big to fail, privatizing profits, socializing losses). I was wrong. Recently, I realised I also have a moral hazard problem. I prioritize my integrity over opportunism. Hence, I get less reward by taking less (opportunistic) risk.
One could argue I’m walking the moral high ground. If so, then why does that hurt so much?
Apparently, I’m a Mr Goody Two-Shoes, an expression derived from the children’s story The History of Little Goody Two-Shoes (1765). Nevertheless, I think, feel and believe that some people can confirm that this Al Capone quote also fits my personality, attitude & behaviour:
“Don’t mistake my kindness for weakness. I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember about me.”
Prioritizing my integrity over opportunism will always cost me short-term opportunities. In the long run, it will develop trust, which is essential in life (eg, friendship, relationship). Nevertheless, those missed opportunities still hurt with respect to matters of the heart.
Sometimes, I wonder whether I could change. I know that I can change. However, a lasting change requires a need, a want and – most of all – a belief in that change. I suppose all three are missing. Hence, there will not be a change in my personality, attitude and behaviour.
“I prefer to be true to myself, even at the hazard of incurring the ridicule of others, rather than to be false, and to incur my own abhorrence.” Note: URL in quote by LO.
