Sta Hungry Stay Foolish

Stay Hungry. Stay Foolish.

One for all, all for one

Late 2019, in an interview with The Economist, the French president warned European countries that they can no longer rely on America to defend NATO allies. BBC: “What we are currently experiencing is the brain death of Nato.” Similarly, the EU survived Brexit but was struggling finding a joint goal.

Now, the Russian invasion of Ukraine has suddenly emboldened the purpose of the EU and of NATO.

Usually, Hungary and Poland have a joint approach against the EU. However, both countries differ in their approach to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Examples: Ukraine War Forces Hungary’s Orban Into Political Contortions (NYT) and Hungary refuses to allow weapons transit to Ukraine (Politico).

Hungarians may still recall 1956 at their parliamentary elections on April 3.

Initially, my title referred to the motto of the Three Musketeers. It is also the unofficial motto of Switzerland. On 28 February, Switzerland joined the EU and its sanctions against Russia (eg, Reuters). Again, One for all, all for one, or Unus pro omnibus, omnes pro uno in Latin

Several unexpected parties are now also joining the bandwagon, like Singapore imposing sanctions on Russia. It’s safer to join a powerful collective than be criticized for hypocritical neutrality. Moreover, if you tolerate this then any country could become the next Ukraine (eg, 1998 song, Taiwan, Turkey).

The Russian invasion in Ukraine shows that the long-held notion of peace dividends was an illusion.

Peace dividend was a political slogan popularized by US President George H.W. Bush and UK Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the light of the 1988–1991 dissolution of the Soviet Union, that described the economic benefit of a decrease in defense spending. The term was frequently used at the end of the Cold War, when many Western nations significantly cut military spending such as Britain’s 1990 Options for Change defence review.” (Wikipedia)

The impact of the Russian invasion in Ukraine is also huge in (neutral) Finland: Majority of Finns now want to join NATO -poll. The Russian president’s obsession with restoring the Soviet Union is frightening to all who understand their country’s difference with Russia: consciousness versus brain death.
