Health, Wealth & Self

Last week was a bad week for me. My health suddenly deteriorated, which scared me. My father died in 1994 at the age of almost 62. Slowly, I’m approaching his then-age. I’m eager to outlive him. My symptoms kind of reminded me of his cause of death. It has taken me about a week to recover, which felt long. Yesterday, I’ve had my first coffee, which still did not taste as before.

Like every cloud has a silver lining, I’ve lost weight and that’s a benefit in my case. My belt is one hole back again and my polo shirts fit better. Still the experience taught me something that I have taken for granted for too long: health = wealth. To a large extent, the opposite is also true because wealth may buy health, either for yourself or for your loved ones.

My Body, Mind & Soul are in balance, regardless of my weight. I’m happy and satisfied with my life and my Self (ie, philautia). My life may not be complete but I’m slowly getting used to that. My Self seems complete though. As noticed in an earlier blog: the more you know yourself, the shorter your relationships.

After writing the above paragraphs, I went looking for an appropriate song. I noticed a very interesting one (see below). The main song line from this rap song states this: I don’t need nothing else than health, wealth and knowing myself. So true. I may adjust my blog title accordingly.

Actually, know thyself is an ancient Delphic maxim inscribed in the forecourt of the Temple of Apollo at Delphi. “The two maxims that followed “know thyself” were “nothing to excess” and “surety brings ruin” (Wiki). Indeed, all three are valid and may be viewed as the ancient Greek path to wisdom.

One might argue that the triangle of Health, Wealth & Self is similar to the triangle of Body (health), Mind (wealth) & Soul (Self), and perhaps even to the triangle of Needs (health), Wants (wealth) & Beliefs (Self).

I doubt it’s a coincidence that prime numbers (eg, 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, etc.) appear to be fundamental in life and nature. Number 2 equals dualism (eg, Knowledge = Power), number 3 equals trialism and/or triangles (eg, Love, Knowledge & Power), number 5 equals fingers & toes and pyramids, and number 7 is “often seen as highly symbolic” (eg, the 7 Belief systems, original 2015 version and 2019 update).

“When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied.” A quote by Herophilus 335.-280 BC), a “Greek physician deemed to be among the earliest anatomists”.
