Recently, Facebook’s CEO announced his plans for creating a metaverse company (eg, CNN, FT, interview in the Verge, Wired). This word was rather new to me. I did write about the multiverse (my blogs) and the Universe (my blogs). A Google search revealed another related word: omniverse. An omniverse includes the metaverse, the universe, the multiverse and any other “verse” (ie, omni means all).
Defining a metaverse is tricky as its concept is developing as we speak (eg, Matthew Ball, Medium). Often, it’s relating to online/virtual gaming and/or social worlds. The tv series Westworld shows that a metaverse may become a kind of live-action role playing game with androids. In the (very) distant future, a metaverse might even include the afterlife, like in the tv series Upload. Hence, Facebook’s recent interest. As a minimum, a metaverse uses internet (eg, Warcraft) and is likely to use augmented reality and/or virtual reality (VR) headsets.
The Universe (ie, uni means one) consists of many galaxies, like “our” Milky Way and its nearest neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy We use the following assumptions about its age, size and its shape:
– Wiki: “Assuming that the Lambda-CDM model is correct, [] the age of the universe as of 2015 of 13.799 ± 0.021 billion years.”
– Wiki: “Because we cannot observe space beyond the edge of the observable universe, it is unknown whether the size of the universe in its totality is finite or infinite.”
– Wiki: ” …. the Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker (FLRW) models [] support inflationary models and the standard model of cosmology, describing a flat, homogeneous universe presently dominated by dark matter and dark energy.”
Various cultures assume a multiverse, a collection of Universes. Their multiverse may be rooted in cosmology (ie, various galaxies) and/or proto-religion. For example, Norse mythology assumes the existence of the cosmic tree Yggdrasil, which is surrounded by the Nine Worlds (ie, the Norse multiverse). The king of the Norse gods is Odin (a.k.a. Wuodan). His son is Thor, who is responsible for the protection of mankind. There are some more parallels between the Old Testament and Norse mythology (eg, Reddit, scandinavia facts).
The above is represented by this diagram, using the space-time dimension and (unknown) other dimension(s):
In summary: the metaverse is based on known knowns (eg, existing technology), the Universe is a mostly a known unknown. The multiverse and the omniverse are mostly unknown unknowns.
