In August 2015, I wrote part one of this blog. It was probably my first blog about dualism (my blogs) without even realising this. Much later, I wrote two blogs on the same topic and/but from a different perspective: Why life is (not) digital (my blogs of 2017 and 2021).
Often, we view Life as a choice between alternatives or ingredients. Rarely, we view Life as a mix of ingredients. We learn that we must focus; that we must make choices. We learn that we must not daydream; that we must think about our future. We learn that money is important and that certain jobs don’t pay the bills.
Michael Crichton was (very) successful in writing books (website) and directing movies (eg, Jurassic Park, Westworld) and producing TV series (eg, ER, 1994-2009). Perhaps, he was a multi-talent and an exception. Perhaps not. Probably, he didn’t believe in the AND/OR dilemma. Originally, he was a Doctor of Medicine (MD) from Harvard Medical School. He never practiced medicine though but used its knowledge in his novels.
As a boy, I dreamt of becoming an archeologist and writing books. For decades, I worked in Finance and forgot about that childhood dream. In 2014, my then-girlfriend urged me to start writing. I used all excuses not to do just that. Her advice made sense though and finally I started writing, albeit reluctantly.
Writing isn’t a full-time task. For quite some time, I have been wondering about additional activities. These should relate to (my) learning and teaching. I still have no clue which one(s). I trust that I’ll know it when I see it. I do know, however, that I do not need, want or believe in monetising my blogs.
The solution might be in time-boxing activities. Else, one activity may absorb all available time. Fortunately, I’m telling myself that I have (at least) three activities: reading, thinking and writing. Solving my AND/OR dilemma may take (much) more time. Rest assured: you ain’t the problem. I am.
