Last Sunday, someone asked me about Monday’s blog. In her view, confident humility is about a fight in which the soul wins from the ego. Her view makes sense. In my terminology, the Body (eg, heart), the Mind (eg, ego) and the Soul would be neatly aligned (my blogs). This would then give a kind and humble person (artist, lyrics, video, Wiki).
When the ego inflates, the soul must shrink proportionally. The triangle of Body, Mind & Soul loses its geometrical shape and may become a flat triangle. An arrogant person will appear. The flatter the triangle, the more arrogant and less compassionate (ie, the “heart” shrinks too). Hence, arrogance is the opposite of humility and/or modesty.
Given the aforementioned, a question arises. Why would you let this happen to you?
The answer might well be in another triangle: Love, Knowledge & Power. This triangle includes the 7 Belief systems that govern human behaviour. Often, arrogance results from an extreme belief in Power (eg, Money), in Knowledge (ie, Philosophy, Science, the Truth), or in Love (eg, the beautiful 1995 comedy-drama Don Juan deMarco).
Another and related answer is about the 3 collective development stages in societies (ie, Needs, Wants & Beliefs) and the 4th though individual development stage, being an Awakening. Humility may be more common in the Needs and Awakening stage, while arrogance is typically associated with the Wants and the Beliefs stage.
There’s another way of phrasing the above. Either you believe (sic!) in Less = More, or you believe in More = Better (my blogs).
These 4 ingredients (ie, arrogance, confidence, ignorance and humility) pose a balancing act in life.
The blog of Jasonjl reaches an interesting conclusion: “While humility is best reserved for those who are already respected, [it’s] something that new employees in any field should really let go of. There are no opportunities to be found if a newbie is to stay silent, [it’s] best to make noise and shake things up.”
