Lupin (Netflix series)

There’s a new Netflix series that is worth watching: Lupin. It has a 7.7 on IMDb. The plot is a mix of (i) taking revenge for a wrongdoing, while (ii) outsmarting opponents. Hence, the plot borrows from two other great films: The Count of Monte Cristo (based on 1844 book by Alexandre Dumas) and The Thomas Crown Affair (adapted from original 1968 screenplay).

Actor Omar Sy gives this French series a unique blend, amongst others through his signature smile. You may know him from the 2011 box-office hit movie Intouchables, and of the great comedy/drama Demain tout commence (2016).

I’m very familiar with Sherlock Holmes, the fictional detective invented by Arthur Conan Doyle (1859-1930). I’m less familiar with Jules Maigret, a fictional detective by Belgian writer George Simenon (1903-1989). However, I had never heard of French novelist Maurice Leblanc (1864-1941), the creator of the “fictional gentleman thief and detective Arsène Lupin“.

The timing of the rebirth of Arsène Lupin by Netflix is excellent because this fictional character was drifting into oblivion, ever since the 1960’s. Maurice Leblanc has written “17 novels and 39 novellas” about Lupin, which will allow Netflix to continue this series, once successful.

The name Lupin may suggest a connection with a lone wolf. However, the original character’s name was “Arsène Lopin, until a local politician of the same name protested” (eg, fandom). The subsequent name change might even be considered an improvement.

Currently, there are only 5 out of 10 episodes available for watching. Episode 5 ends with a cliffhanger. It’s unclear when Netflix will put the next 5 episodes online, though April 2021 is frequently mentioned (eg, Express).

Recent successful Netflix shows (eg, Lupin, Virgin River) have learned a lot from Hallmark Channel successes (eg, Cedar Cove, Chesapeake ShoresGood Witch, When Calls the Heart, When Hope Calls). Hallmark films typically are about romances and (family) values and/but show no nudity and (very) limited (verbal) violence. Hence, it’s easy to recommend this/these TV series.
