A regular reader of my blogs will know that I like asking the Why question. Recently, someone asked me a counter question: does everything have a reason? After taking a moment, I answered “Yes”. I could not think of anything that doesn’t have a reason (eg, for being, for happening). It might be useful, however, to elaborate on the word reason.
In my view, cause and effect (my blogs) are common reasons for events that happen around us. In the absence of cause and effect, reasons for events may involve reciprocity (my blogs). I’m less sure about time as the concept of time is a Sumerian invention (my 2016 blog). Balance & symmetry (my blogs) are other fundamental reasons (eg, for being, for happening).
Let’s take the example of our Sun. The sun is one of about 200 billion stars in the Universe that provides gravity, light, radiation and warmth. Without a sun there would – most likely – be no life, in whatever shape or form. Forbes-2018: “Over the past generation, we’ve begun to understand that solar systems like ours are the rule in the Universe, rather than the exception.”
A solar system like ours is a perfect example of fundamental concepts like balance & symmetry, cause & effect, interconnectedness (my blogs), and reciprocity. Please have a look at my 2019 blog: Are planets evolutionary lab experiments? Also see part 2, part 3 and part 4 of that blog series.
It’s tempting using the Chaos theory as a reason (sic) for answering “No” to the question in this blog title.
The diagram to the right puts the concept of Chaos in a very different context. Chaos is a phase in Change, the eternal force.
Moreover, chaos is not the opposite of an equilibrium (or order). Chaos is a phase that occurs between a vacuum and an equilibrium, either from decoupling or towards coupling.
“Eventually all things fall into place. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments, and know everything happens for a reason.” A quote by Albert Schweitzer (1875 – 1965), “an Alsatian polymath [], a theologian, organist, writer, humanitarian, philosopher, and physician”.
