Project Fear (4): denial of climate cycles

The ignorant conservative right usually denies the existence of climate change. The arrogant liberal left pretends the absence of (geological) cycles of climate change. The Earth has always faced climate change, ever since its formation 4.5 billion years ago. The main geological cycles are glacial and interglacial periods of some 40-100 thousand years each.

Currently, we are in the Holocene interglacial period. Wiki: “Outside these [ice] ages, the Earth seems to have been ice free even in high latitudes.” From a scientific point of view, the current melting of the polar caps is consistent with Earth’s history and – moreover – to be expected. Please see my 2018 blog: The relationship between CO2, ice, water and (greenhouse) gases.

On 28 November 2019, the U.N. World Meteorological Organization issued its latest climate change warning: “Global temperatures are on course for a 3-5 degrees Celsius (5.4-9.0 degrees Fahrenheit) rise this century” (Reuters, WMO). Actually, this rise is less than I had assumed. Hence, it’s hard to understand words like “catastrophe“, “emergency” or “urgency“.

Examples of catastrophic climate change events are:

The idea of stopping geological processes is preposterous and a mix of human arrogance and ignorance. Often these ideas involve geo- or climate engineering (my 2019 blog). The latest idea is relocating Earth away from the Sun. Such cures are (probably) worse than the disease.

The climate change “idleness” of governments around the world may well relate to the above. They know there is no reason for panic. Climate change is business as usual. Moreover, giving in to such panic would probably cause human mass migration, which would topple governments. Hence, panic is in the interest of fearmongers; not of elected politicians.

“It is a strange thing, but when you are dreading something, and would give anything to slow down time, it has a disobliging habit of speeding up.” A quote by J.K. Rowling from her book Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
