There are many similarities between ant colonies and human societies: consciousness, cooperation, hierarchy, size, specialization, and even wars. Humans study ants. Somehow, it feels unlikely that ants study humans. In terms of mass, the ant (1-5 mg) vs human (62 kg) ratio is 1:21 million. Humans are, however, preoccupied with studying the Universe (eg, age, composition, dimensions).
On 15 October 2019, a scientific discovery was published in The Astrophysical Journal: Mysterious Coherence in Several-megaparsec Scales between Galaxy Rotation and Neighbor Motion. This article suggests that the universe is controlled by gigantic structures. Hence, the entire Universe might be a ginormous network, similar to the neural circuit in the human brain.
Actually, network structures are quite common on our planet: ants (supercolonies), humans (eg, World Wide Web a.k.a. the internet), trees (wood wide web), and fungi (eg, mycorrhizal network). Network structures have a habit of optimizing upside potential and downside risk.
If the Universe is no longer the aftermath of an explosion (ie, Big Bang theory) then we must rethink “our basic model of the universe” (Big Think). Why? Any network has a functionality. Such an aim, meaning or purpose is often related to communication and/or transport (eg, data, food, information). Moreover, if it has a functionality, it must be part of something much bigger.
A nanoparticle in our brain would not know that our brain is a closed sphere and also the command centre of a living organism. Actually, a most recent and “wild” scientific idea is that our Universe is not flat but a closed sphere (Science Alert, 5 November 2019).
Hence, “the strange similarity of neuron and galaxy networks” might not be a coincidence after all: the Universe that we can see (sic!) might actually be the inside of a brain of a living organism. Today this field is astrobiology; before it was panpsychism and panspermia. In such a view, humans are conscious living nanoparticles, similar what ants are to humans.
Disclose-2015: “The first person to think of the universe as a great organism was the Greek philosopher Anaxagoras, but the idea of the universe as a living organism was largely formulated by Plato, then by the Stoics, Plotinus and Neoplatonism.”
It’s tempting to raise a question at this point: how would humans react after finding out that we are conscious nanoparticles, living in a Droste effect? François de La Rochefoucauld (1613-1680) would have argued: “In friendship as well as love, ignorance very often contributes more to our happiness than knowledge.” Note LO: italic markings in quote by me.
