Joe Walsh for President

I still remember Joe Walsh running for President back in 1980. Wiki: “Walsh ran for President of the United States in 1980, promising to make “Life’s Been Good” the new national anthem if he won, and ran on a platform of “Free Gas For Everyone”. This Joe Walsh is famous for rock songs like Rocky Mountain Way (1973) and Life in the Fast Lane (1976) with the Eagles.

This month another Joe Walsh announced his 2020 presidential campaign. This Joe Walsh wants to attack Donald Trump from the right of the political spectrum. But seriously, folks……. (also the title of a 1978 Joe Walsh album).

The American conservative politician Joe Walsh has my immediate sympathy for claiming that the 25th Amendment should be looked at for removing Trump because “we all know that he’s unfit” (eg, Guardian). In an interview with ABC host George Stephanopoulos, he added:

“It should be looked at. We’ve never had a situation like this. You can’t believe a word [Trump] says. And again, I don’t care your politics ― that should concern you. He’s nuts. He’s erratic. He’s cruel. He stokes bigotry. He’s incompetent. George, he’s a narcissist. The only thing he cares about is Trump. He doesn’t give a damn about America.” (HuffPost)

It’s amazing and refreshing hearing these words, especially once you realise those words are coming from another Republican 2020 presidential candidate. Most important is that this Joe Walsh goes to the core of the issue why Trump should be removed from office: Trump is ruining America through being thin-skinned and having an easily bruised ego.

However, a recent article in the conservative Washington Examiner makes clear that the politician Joe Walsh isn’t much different from the politician Donald Trump:

“Joe Walsh, who announced a primary run against President Trump on Sunday, has a long history of anti-Muslim comments, racist remarks, conspiracy theories, violent rhetoric, and more. And the apologies Walsh has offered about his past and the claims about when he decided he could no longer support Trump appear less than forthcoming.”

“In the 1990s, [Joe Walsh] called himself a moderate Republican, but he later became a conservative and a Tea Party activist’ (Wiki). The Tea Party movement advocates for lower taxes, a lower national debt, and a lower “federal budget deficit through decreased government spending“. Trump did the first by ballooning the second and third (eg, NYT, WSJ).

I’m looking forward to ideological debates between Republican Joe Walsh and Democratic presidential candidate Elizabeth Warren. The septuagenarians Joe Biden, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump should play golf in Florida rather than taking on (new) presidential roles.

“Politics is the art of looking for trouble, finding it everywhere, diagnosing it incorrectly and applying the wrong remedies.” A quote by Groucho Marx (1890-1977), an American comedian.
