A few days ago, Radio 2 dj Shay! made a remark about a song she had just played: “I thought the world was about Love rather than Money”. In 1976, Stevie Wonder released his famous double album Songs in the Key of Life. The opening track of that album has illustrated several of my blogs: Love’s in Need of Love Today (lyrics, video).
My diagram to the left represents the concept of trialism, although not the version of John Cottingham. It’s similar to Bertrand Russell‘s trialism (eg, BrainPickings-2017).
It’s important to realise that the ancient Greeks distinguished 4 different words for Love: agápe (divine), éros (romantic), philía (brotherly & sisterly), and storgē (family).
DJ Shayveca Kreuger‘s remark made me realise that there might be an essential difference between men and women: dualism is only for men. Women know better.
My previous remark would also explain the Gendering Secularization Theory: the issue of secularization is primarily male.
A similar conclusion was reached in “Secularization and Gender: an historical approach to women and religion in the twentieth century” (2001) by Virginia Lieson Brereton and Margaret Lamberts Bendroth (JSTOR). In 1916, James Leuba came to a similar conclusion.
It’s tempting to argue that women are more likely to believe in trialism as women can create life. The role of men in creating life is – to a large extent – minimal.
It’s also tempting to argue that men in creative roles are more likely to believe in trialism – and thus Love (eg, musicians, painters, writers). Creativity is – like a creation – a mystical process. For an explanation on how creativity works, please listen to (author) Elizabeth Gilbert‘s 2009 TED Talk: your elusive creative genius.
“The good life is one inspired by love and guided by knowledge. Neither love without knowledge, nor knowledge without love can produce a good life.” A quote by Bertrand Russell (1872–1970), a British philosopher, mathematician, historian, writer and 1950 Nobel laureate.
