“What goes up must come down”. It’s a quote by Isaac Newton and explains the concept of Earth’s gravity in a nutshell. In my 19 August 2016 blog, Gravity and the 7 Belief systems, I stated that “Wisdom is in the middle of the Knowledge and Power domain of the 7 Belief systems. Wisdom is our core, our human center of gravity”.
For quite some time, we have seen an expansion of each of the 7 Belief systems towards its extremes: Love (narcissism), Money (greed), Philosophy (supremacy), Politics (authoritarianism), Religion (religious terrorism), Science (climate change), and the Truth (denial). Considering Isaac Newton’s quote there must come a moment of reversal. I think, feel and believe that we are seeing this reversal now. More and more, Belief systems are clotting together.
Capitalism and Communism are both examples where Money and Politics used to clit together. Politics and Religion are clotting together in the Political Islam although we may be seeing a similar Christian clotting of Politics and Religion in USA. The global climate change debate is the clearest example of a convergence of Science and the Truth. White Supremacy is an example of combining Philosophy and the Truth. The clearest implosion of the 7 Belief systems is in the USA now.
Wisdom is either the victor or the victim when the Knowledge and Power domain of the 7 Belief systems are colliding. An implosion and subsequent convergence of Love, Money, Philosophy, Politics, Religion, Science, and the Truth can easily result in an authoritarian society (eg, North Korea). The love or self-love (ie, narcissism) of its leader will drive an entire society (eg, China, North Korea, Philippines, Russia, Turkey, USA).
Gravity is one of the 4 fundamental forces in nature. The other 3 are electromagnetism, strong nuclear, and weak nuclear. Distance decides which force is stronger: gravity is dominant for planets and galaxies, electromagnetism is “causing attraction and repulsion of objects”, the strong nuclear force “holds most ordinary matter together”, and weak nuclear “is responsible for radioactive decay“. Probably all of these 4 forces play a role in any expansion and implosion.
As always, any Change creates Fear. Our common disregard for history makes us forget that Change is the default and that any Equilibrium is a temporary exception. We usually want things to stay the same and thus we often fight Change. Most people will only adapt their attitude and behaviour when they realise that Change is “permanent”. The ones who do not change, usually do not survive.
The ultimate solution is to disconnect. Information and Technology are accelerators of our Fears. Most people would probably live happier if they knew less. This title of a 2014 article said it all: “Knowledge Is Power, Ignorance Is Bliss: Happiness Is Striking The Perfect Balance”.
Perhaps Wisdom is the art of ignoring. A Google search revealed that this thought comes close to a quote from the Persian philosopher Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273): “The art of knowing is knowing what to ignore.”
