On 9 October 1929, a world map was discovered in Istanbul which had been prepared in 1513 by by the Ottoman admiral and cartographer Piri Reis. Approximately 1/3 of the map survives. In the map’s legend, Piri inscribed that the map was based on about 20 charts and mappae mundi. According to Piri, these maps included 8 Ptolemaic maps, an Arabic map of India, 4 newly drawn Portuguese maps from Sindh, Pakistan and a map by Christopher Columbus of the western lands. (Wiki)
The Piri Reis Map is considered to be one of the “5 greatest unsolved enigmas of humanity” for three main reasons: it displays the – undiscovered – Antarctic, the Antarctic is ice-free, and its accuracy is considered to be far beyond human knowledge at that time. How is that even possible??
American author and college professor Charles Hapgood (1904-1982) proposed several severely disputed theories: the existence of a highly advanced civilisation before the catastrophic sea level rise of some 13,000 years ago, in combination with the earth crust displacement (or pole shift) theory which would explain the ice-free Antarctic.
Remarkably, Albert Einstein was a clear supporter of Charles Hapgood. The Einstein-Hapgood correspondence is a forgotten page in the history of science (source, Amazon, e-book). Another supporter of Hapgood was the Director of the American Geographical Society (AGS), John K. Wright. In 1906, the AGS had received a precious gift: the 1452 Mappamundi (or world map) by Giovanni Leardo. That map depicted America before its 1492 discovery by Columbus.
Mr Hapgood argued that the world maps of Piri Reis, Oronteus Finaeus, Gerhard De Kremer aka Mercator, and Philip Buache are based on much and much older maps of an ancient unknown and highly advanced civilisation that was wiped out by a catastrophic event some 13,000 years ago.
Actually, there is recent (2014) evidence of an ice-free Antarctic and also undisputed evidence of a rather catastrophic global sea-level rise of about 4 meters (or 13 ft) within 100 years and some 13,000 years ago (eg, LiveScience (2014), Wikipedia-The Last Glacial Maximum). There is however no direct evidence of an ancient highly advanced civilisation, apart from several “anomalies”.
The assumptions of a catastrophe – or even a Deluge (NL: zondvloed) – 13,000 years ago (11,000 BC) in combination with the existence of an ancient highly advanced civilisation may well be too much for many – if not most – people. Yet, if mankind has existed for 2.8 million years then a highly advanced civilisation could have existed 15 thousand years ago.
The duration of the Deluge – or catastrophe – might explain the lack of (compelling) evidence about an ancient civilisation prior to the ones which we do know: see summary in my 11 April 2015 blog. Basically, our knowledge about former civilisations stops around 3,000-4,000 BC. A lot of evidence would indeed have been “washed away” over 7,000 to 8,000 years (eg, link 1, link 2, link 3, link 4).
In the above context, it’s not even surprising that scientists are now concluding that the Biblical Flood as mentioned in Genesis – and other sources – has actually happened some 12,000 – 13,000 years ago (eg, ABC News, DailyMail, TIME). It is also an intriguing thought that this Great Flood may have lasted until 3,000BC – 4,000BC which would then suddenly coincide with biblical chronology.
Some people (eg, Edgar Cayce) claim that this unknown highly advanced civilisation represents the famous legend of Atlantis. Allegedly, Atlantis eventually fell out of favour with the gods and famously submerged into the Atlantic Ocean.
